Career Insights

Graham HillGraham Hill, Field Director

I joined Northwestern Mutual after finishing college. I knew I wanted to work with people and help people make their lives and the lives of their families better. I also wanted a career where I would be rewarded for hard work. I am in a situation where I can do both. The greatest reward for me is knowing that the work we do is beneficial. We aren’t selling commodities or pushing products. We take our prospects and clients through a process unlike any other company. At the end of the day, we can feel good because we know we’ve helped someone protect themselves and their family from the unknown.

Career Milestones and Some Advice
I think a great goal for new reps like me is the new client bonus. We are meeting new people who find value in the work we do. Getting a place in the Million Dollar Round Table is a big one too. Being recognized for best year ever every year at the annual meeting is pretty special also.

If you’re considering this as a career, it’s great for those who are willing to work hard and do the right thing. The three I's are right on—income, independence, impact. That sums up our career in three words. People need our help. Think of where you want to be—personally and professionally—in five, 10, and 25 years and do what that person would do now.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Practice your language constantly. Do joint work as much as you can. Ask tough questions. Be firm in your recommendations. Always keep your eyes open for who you need to be calling on. Help people. Do what you say you are going to do. Ask for referrals at every meeting. Be good to your staff and others in the office. Own what you sell in a big way. Show your recommendations to your clients. Get on the phone!

Charlie ReedArthea "Charlie" Staeger Reed, Ph.D., Long-Term Care Specialist

Before I became a Financial Representative, I was a professor and chair of the Department of Education, University of North Carolina at Asheville (1978-1996). I also authored or co-authored 15 books and was the editor of an international journal.

Personal experience with my parents’ long-term care needs convinced me to become a Financial Representative focusing on long-term care insurance. My goal is to educate people about the importance of preparing for the eventuality of long-term care.

The greatest reward is seeing my clients and their families benefit from the work I have done. I am also rewarded on a daily basis when people appreciate the assistance I have given them.

The greatest challenge is running my own business, figuring out how to pay myself and pay my employees. However, this is also the greatest advantage of being of Financial Representative.

Early on, the biggest challenge was learning all aspects of the business, not only the products, but also underwriting, commissions, bonuses – in other words, maximizing my effectiveness.

But along the way, I learned I enjoy the competition. I can sell as well as educate.
