Daikin Applied is seeking a well-rounded, collaborative, commercially minded leader to become their new, Director of Model-Based Engineering. Designated as a "strategic hire", the successful candidate will be a transformational leader who provides technical leadership in the establishment, deployment, and utilization of a comprehensive suite of Model-Based Engineering (MBE) capabilities across the Daikin Applied Engineering groups.

A Day in the Life:

  • Setting the technical direction and implementation of the MBE tools and workflows; including modeling, analysis, simulation, and computation within DAA Engineering. This will necessitate the initiation and maintenance of extensive contacts with key engineers and scientists in other areas of the organization, both in the US and internationally.
  • The new Director, Model-Based Engineering will report to the Vice President, Virtual Engineering, and work in close collaboration with the entire engineering leadership team.
  • Interface with corporate leaders in Japan requiring ongoing communications in the support and approval of engineering objectives.
  • Support both current products and new product development with Daikin's production and engineering design facilities in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and with Daikin's global Applied Development Center located in Staunton, Virginia, and Plymouth, Minnesota, and with the Technical Innovation Center located in Osaka, Japan.
  • Apply extensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices in the implementation and integration of disparate modeling, analysis, simulation, and computational tools and workflows in support of an MBE environment.
  • Develop system-level requirements for the implementation of an MBE tool suite using commercial tools as the backbone and generate relevant, measurable, achievable key performance indicators. These requirements include the integration and optimization of the tool suite with computing and storage assets including objective scope of capability growth over time.
  • Develop and utilize necessary training materials and programs to engage staff in the proper deployment of MBE tools and best practices.
  • Assess the current organization, develop a plan for transforming the current team structure, processes, and culture, and drive execution of transformational change.
  • Resolves problems using solutions that involve new techniques, technologies, or concepts.
  • Develop roles and responsibilities and collaboration guidelines for working across the global engineering group to effectively deploy MBE capabilities.
  • Implement novel approaches for the re-use integration of existing modeling and simulation, engineering tools, and physics codes.
  • Supervise the professionals and technicians who assist them, estimate personnel needs, and schedule and assign work to meet completion deadlines on assigned projects.
  • Report on MBE status and plans including but not limited to capturing lessons learned, developing policies, guides, procedures, and reports, and preparing and giving presentations.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of new technologies that may improve MBE performance and develops recommendations accordingly.

What you will Bring:

  • The successful candidate will bring creativity, foresight, and mature professional judgment in anticipating and solving unprecedented problems, determining project objectives and requirements, and developing standards and guides for diverse engineering, computing, and scientific activities.
  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Engineering, Computer Science or Applied Science is required. Master's or Doctoral degree (M.S., Ph.D.) is highly preferred.
  • 10+ years' experience in engineering leadership in HVAC or a related industry (i.e., aerospace, automotive, microelectronics/controls)
  • Experience leading Model Based Engineering in a new product development (NPD) environment, preferably using both stage-gate and agile NPD processes.
  • Leadership experience in a multicultural or global environment, preferably including an international assignment, is highly desirable.
